Importing Radio Communication Equipment into Thailand: Do You Need an NBTC License

Which Equipment Needs an NBTC Import License

Products requiring approval before import include radio communication equipment, along with receivers and devices used to pick up or convert signals for broadcasting and television services. This category covers a wide range of communication devices that transmit or receive radio frequencies.

Import License vs Use License: Two Different Documents

  • Import license — valid for 180 days, and only covers the process of bringing the equipment into the country.
  • Use license — valid for the entire service life of that specific radio communication device, and is a completely separate document from the import license.

Importers need to be clear on which license they're actually applying for, since the required documents and purpose differ between the two.

Documents Needed to Apply for an Import License

  • An application on Form Kor.Tor.1
  • A national ID card, or a copy of the commercial registration if applying as a shop
  • A corporate registration certificate stating a purpose related to trading radio communication equipment, issued no more than 3 months prior, if applying as a juristic entity
  • A copy of the license to trade radio communication equipment
  • The original equipment specification sheet and a copy of the Purchase Order

The import license fee is 200 baht, excluding 7% VAT.

What Happens If You Import Without a License

Equipment that requires approval but is imported without an NBTC license risks being held at the customs checkpoint, and constitutes an offense under laws governing radio communication activities. Importers should check whether their equipment falls under this requirement and file for the license well in advance.

Tip: Since the import license is only valid for 180 days, plan your application date to line up closely with your shipment's expected arrival in Thailand, and get your equipment trading license and corporate documents ready ahead of time so the permit doesn't expire before the goods arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions About NBTC Import Licenses

Does every mobile phone or IoT device need this license?

It depends on how the device transmits or receives radio frequencies. Check with the NBTC directly, or have the Transpo team verify it before you place your order, to confirm whether a license is required.

What if my import license expires before the shipment reaches Thailand?

You'll need to apply for a new one before proceeding with import clearance — an expired import license can't be used to clear customs.

Is the license to trade radio equipment the same as the import license?

No. The trading license needs to already be in place, and is then submitted as a supporting document when you apply for the import license.

It covers submitting the import declaration, document and cargo inspection, duty and tax assessment and payment, and finally releasing the goods from customs custody. If your product needs a permit from another agency — such as the Thai FDA or TISI — that has to be matched in the system too.
